Catholic Education
Sometimes it takes a visitor to notice the beauty of
an area. Often when we are surrounded by beauty we can
begin to take it for granted. Catholic
Education is a beautiful gift that we have had in this
country for many years. It is a gift that cost our forebears
dear. We have so many examples of people who gave their
lives and indeed their livelihoods to ensure that many
who would not have been able to afford it got an education
that enabled them to bear much fruit in life. Catholic
Education can continue today to be a beautiful gift
in this country.
The primary call
of Catholic education is to recognise Jesus in all people
and to live in communion with all people. What makes
Catholic education different is Jesus whose call to
communion we celebrate in the Eucharist. When we live
in communion we live united. We live in equality. We
serve one another. We live the love that St Paul describes
so clearly in the Second Reading.
As we begin our
celebration of Catholic Schools’ Week it is important
that we don’t take the gift of our Catholic schools
for granted or that we don’t become negative or
cynical about them. We have much to celebrate.

Mass
to celebrate Catholic Schools’ Week
on Thursday
at 12.30 pm here in St Eugene’s Cathedral.
The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord
takes place on Tuesday, 2nd February. On this holy feast-day
we each have an opportunity to consecrate our lives
anew to the Lord. How do we do this? We can simply make
a prayer or re-dedication to God which can take many
forms. It can be a simple heartfelt prayer reaffirming
our baptismal promises or a re-visiting of our religious
or marriage vows. Or it can be a prayer which asks the
Holy Spirit to renew our sense of vocation as a priest
or religious or as a lay person in a chosen job, trade
or profession.
Next Sunday at 11.00 am Mass all the children baptised
in St Eugene’s Cathedral since January 2009 will
be presented to The Lord in a special prayer of blessing.
Their families and friends have also been invited to
join with the Parish Community in this special ceremony.

Candles will be blessed at 8.00, 9.00,
10.00 am and 7.30 pm Masses

3rd February is the Feast of St Blaise.
