FRIEND, MOVE UP HIGHER

Once more the Gospel uses the image of a banquet or a marriage feast to illustrate the life to come in God’s kingdom where everyone who has been faithful to Christ in his or her lifetime will have a place at the table. We are reminded of this every time we come to Mass – by our baptism we are entitled to a place at the table of the Lord’s Word and of his Body.

In our current culture of celebrity and fame - fanned into flame by a seemingly endless series of television programmes designed to find the best singer or dancer or cook or entertainer - getting to the top, being first, carrying off the first prize, being voted into the next round, escaping eviction or making it to the final tend to become the most important goal in life for those who participate and, let us admit it, for those of us who watch.

Imagine the consternation that would ensue if the victor or winner were to say that he or she did not agree with the decision of the judges or adjudicators and that in fairness the award should go to someone else. It would make for some very interesting television programmes!

Jesus’ advice in today’s Gospel is to take the lowest place at table so that the host who invited us might ask us to move up higher and so we would find ourselves being honoured in the eyes of others. It makes good sense in a purely secular arena. It makes even more sense in the spiritual arena - we each of us know of reasons which would make us unworthy of the top place. That we might be invited to occupy such a place has much more to do with God’s free gift of grace than with any claim we might like to put forward.

The 4th National Grandparents’ Pilgrimage will take place to The Shrine of Our Lady of Knock on Sunday, 12th September. Anointing of the Sick at 2.00 pm, Pilgrimage Mass at 3.00 pm, followed by Eucharistic Adoration.
