Put Our Faith in Jesus

In recent Gospel readings, the disciples have been suffering from a kind of spiritual blindness – they fail to see that Christ must suffer first before entering into his glory and they are unable to understand what he meant when he spoke to them about his passion and death.

The blind beggar of today’s Gospel must have been a familiar figure to many who followed Jesus as he sat by the roadside begging – we are told his name, Bartimaeus.

He refuses to be silent when told by some of the crowd to do so. Instead, he shouts all the louder because he recognises that Jesus is indeed the messiah by calling him “Son of David.” This the disciples had failed to do.

It is obvious from his prayer to Jesus, “Master, let me see again” that he once had the gift of sight but had lost it through sickness or accident. Once his sight is restored to him through his faith, he immediately becomes one of the followers of Jesus.

Although we have the gift of perfect sight, we often fail to see things as they really are. Like the disciples, we fail to see that we are called upon to suffer as Christ was.
Often when we are called upon to carry the cross with Christ – and it is never a cross of our own choosing – we become angry and frustrated and our faith begins to fail.

Today’s Gospel calls us to put our faith in Jesus, as Bartimaeus did, and to humbly pray that we might see again.

All Saints, Sunday, 1st November

If a close relative was buried from another church during the past year please leave the deceased’s name in the Sacristy or Parochial House so that they can be remembered in the Mass and ask someone to receive a candle in their memory.
