GIVE US TODAY OUR DAILY BREAD
This Sunday’s
Gospel is built around the teaching by Christ of the
Lord’s prayer – the prayer that is common
to all communities in the Christian tradition and which
is a bond and source of unity for all who believe in
Christ.
Before we went
to school and learned to read and write, it is probable
that most of us learned the words of this prayer from
our parents and as such it provides a valued link with
those who have died and are now enjoying the peace and
joy of the Kingdom for whose coming we pray in that
prayer.
It must have
come as a surprise to Jesus’ listeners when he
told them that “your heavenly Father knows what
you need before you even ask him”. Because of
human experience, we tend to think that we must be continually
reminding our heavenly Father of our needs lest he forget
about us. It comes as something of a shock to us to
read that he already knows – even before we pray.
Again, because of our experience as human beings, who
have been sinful and unfaithful, we think that if our
prayer is not answered exactly the way we want it answered,
then our praying has been in vain and a waste of time.
There is always the danger of equating our needs with
our wants – the latter are many while the former
are very few. Think of the Lord’s words in last
Sunday’s Gospels to Martha – “You
fret and worry about many things, but only few are needed,
in fact only one.”
One of the more
positive consequences of the current economic recession
is that we are beginning – painfully, perhaps
– to realise that we can be happy with less and
that companionship and friendship, relaxing with friends,
enjoying the beauties of God’s creation and taking
pleasure in simple things are valuable gifts in their
own right and these are the gifts – priceless
and without a price – that are given to us without
restriction by our Father in heaven.
