Diocesan Appointments

Bishop Hegarty has appointed Fr David O’Kane as Parish Priest of Claudy. Over the past six years Fr O’Kane has shared in the lives of many parishioners. His quiet manner and compassion helped many especially in times of sadness and difficulties. We thank God for his faith, inspiration, commitment, hard work and friendship. We wish him every blessing and promise to keep him in our prayers. We pray that he will have many happy and peaceful years in Claudy. Fr O’Kane will be installed as Parish Priest next Saturday, 29th August at 6.30 pm in St Patrick’s Church, Claudy.

Bishop Hegarty has appointed Fr Peter Raftery (CSSp) to serve as curate here in St Eugene’s Cathedral.

Jesus Really Present in the Eucharist

We have to admit that the disciples could be slow on the uptake; they could be dull and passive and they often misunderstood and missed the point. However, in today’s reading they are spot on and show that they have indeed understood what Jesus was teaching. In fact, so clear and crisp is their grasp of Jesus’ teaching on the Eucharist that many turned back and no longer followed him.

What is truly shocking and scandalous about the Eucharist is that the gift held out to us is that of the whole Christ, the body and blood, soul and divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ and, therefore, the whole of Christ is truly, really and substantially made present to us. In other words, Jesus is made real and present in the most full and complete sense. Jesus’ presence in the Eucharist is substantial in that he himself is wholly and entirely present. What a gift! What a blessing! What a grace!
