Easter Sunday, the Resurrection of the Lord

PRIESTS OF THE PARISH
Very Rev Michael Canny Adm
Rev David O'Kane CC
Rev Gary Wade CC

Easter Sunday

“The Resurrection of Jesus is the crowning truth of our faith in Christ.” This is how the New Catechism describes the events of Easter. The stone rolled away, the empty tomb, the words of the angel “ He is not here, but has risen” all point to the fact that the resurrection of Jesus from the dead is the central truth of our faith. The resurrection is a fact of history as real as any historical event we care to mention. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ is alive.

On Thursday we celebrated the Last Supper. On Friday we recalled the passion and death of Christ and then today we witness his resurrection. We cannot separate all these. One writer says, “Easter is how we look at the cross. It is how faith looks at the cross.”

One of the most striking symbols of this Easter season is the Paschal Candle. For the next six weeks it will take a prominent place in the sanctuary. The candle was blessed and lit at the vigil and carried into the darkened cathedral while the words “Christ our Light” were said three times. As we look at it we are reminded that the risen Christ is truly the light of a darkened world. More than ever we need that light to shine brightly.

The fact that Christ is risen from the dead changes not only the way we look at life but also the way we look at death. He has conquered sin and death and is the gateway to eternal life for us all. That is our joy, our hope and our consolation. Alleluia.

Bishop Hegarty and the priests of the parish
wish all parishioners a very
Happy, Holy and Peaceful Easter.

May every touch of my hands today be a million acts of love for you.

I kiss the wounds in your Sacred Head with sorrow deep and true
May every thought in my mind today be a million acts of love for you.
