ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS
Some of the most
significant events in history have been expressed in
actions rather than words and perhaps because of that
they tend to remain in our memories longer. It is easier
to recall an event that we saw with our own eyes or,
perhaps more commonly, viewed on television than it
is to remember the words that were spoken at that event
– the British Prime Minister returning from Munich
in 1938 waving a piece of paper which he – and
others – naively believed would first human to
walk on the surface of the moon in July 1969, Pope John
Paul II kneeling to kiss the soil of a country he was
visiting for the first time, offering the gift of flowers
at a time of celebration such as a birthday or at a
time of sadness.
Jesus refers
to this in today’s Gospel when, in his parable,
he speaks of those who risk being excluded from the
Kingdom. Their injured response “We once ate and
drank in your company” are merely words. To say,
as they say, “You taught in our streets”
expresses very eloquently how the words of the Gospel
and its demands on each individual follower of Christ
have not penetrated into their hearts. It has been simply
something that happened without having any impact on
them.
For us to point
to the fact that we have been baptised or confirmed
is not enough. We have to allow the Gospel that is proclaimed
every time we come to Mass to penetrate more and more
deeply into our hearts so that our thoughts, words and
actions will be inspired by the word of God. We have
to be continually formed and reformed by the saving
words of Christ. By so doing we may become last as contemporary
culture views things but we will be among the first
in the Kingdom of Heaven.
