MISSION SUNDAY

Today is Mission Sunday and as this event comes round year by year we are reminded that mission is an integral part of the life and ministry of the Church. It could not be otherwise since from its very origin, the Church has been missionary. When Christ bade farewell to his disciples on the mountain before returning to his Father in the Ascension, his words to them were: “Go, therefore, teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”.

Many people nowadays are very interested in tracing their ancestry, aided by modern means of communication and research, especially the Internet. It can be fascinating to go back, generation by generation, as far as one can go, to learn about the lives of our forebears who lived in bygone times.

Mission Sunday reminds us that we could do the same in our life of faith. From the land where Jesus lived and died to Greece and Asia Minor and Rome, from there to France, Spain and North Africa, and thence to Ireland, England and so on – the message of the Gospel continues to reach the hearts of men and women and children.

The Irish Church has a proud history of mission activity overseas. In the first half of the twentieth century, several congregations of men and women were established by Irishmen and women to bring the love of Christ to the ends of the earth in pastoral care, education and medical expertise. The kidnapping of an Irish priest recently in the Philippines brings into sharp focus the sacrifice that countless, priests, sisters and brothers have made in leaving the security of home and family to fulfil the command of Christ – Go teach all nations.

Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes led by Bishop Hegarty - 16th to 21st July 2010: Cost £629. Payable in instalments. Regular forms available from the Parish Office/Pilgrimage Office. Forms for those in need of care or those aged 80+ available only from the Pilgrimage Office, telephone 71260293 - open on Tuesdays from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm, Thursdays from 11.00 am to 2.00 pm and Saturdays from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm.

There will be a Concelebrated Mass at 7.30 pm on Monday, 2nd November for the deceased members of each home in the parish. An invitation will be sent to the families and friends of those buried from the Cathedral during the past year to ask each family to nominate a representative to receive a candle in memory of their loved one. If a close relative was buried from another church during the past year please leave the deceased’s name in the Sacristy or Parochial House so that they can be remembered in the Mass and ask someone to receive a candle in their memory.
