Second Sunday of Lent

PRIESTS OF THE PARISH

Rev Gary Wade CC

Glimpse Into Another World

Today we are given a glimpse into another world - a heavenly world. The three disciples Peter, James and John, who accompanied Jesus up the mountain, were awestruck at the sight of the transfigured Lord speaking with Moses and Elijah.

Then suddenly they were overshadowed by a cloud, from which they heard a voice proclaiming: ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him’ (v. 5). Many people - saints, heroes of faith and ordinary men and women - witness to having an experience of God which is a momentary foretaste of what will constitute the happiness of heaven. These are usually brief experiences that are occasionally granted by God, especially prior to difficult trials.

No one, however, is permitted to live ‘on Tabor’ while on earth. Indeed, human existence is a journey of faith and, because of this, moves ahead more in shadows than in full light. No Christian is a stranger to moments of obscurity and even of complete darkness. While we are on this earth, our relationship with God takes place more by listening than by seeing, and we learn to walk with closed eyes, so to speak, relying on the interior light that is kindled in us by the Word of God.

To listen to him in his Word; to listen to him in the events of our lives, seeking to decipher in them the messages of Providence; and to listen to him in our brothers and sisters, especially in the lowly and the poor, whom Jesus asks us to love by practical action. To listen to Christ and obey his voice: this is the principal way, in fact the only way, that leads to the fullness of joy and of love.
