Christ’s
Gift to Us
Today we celebrate
the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. It is an
opportunity for us to deepen our appreciation of the
Mass, of what it is we celebrate every time we gather
together around the Eucharistic table.
The Mass is the
feast of the Lord’s supper. It is based on the
meal that Jesus shared with his disciples on the night
before he died. Knowing that he was going to die, Jesus
gave his disciples a precious gift, the gift of himself:
“Take this all of you and eat it; for this is
my body. Take this all of you and drink from it; for
this is my blood .....
I
shall not drink any more wine until the day I drink
the new wine in the kingdom of God”.
Jesus gave his
disciples the gift of his own body and blood to help
and sustain them until such time as they would see him
face to face again in the fullness of the kingdom of
God.The Eucharist is Christ’s gift to us, the
gift of himself. It is a truly astonishing gift, and
our constant response to it should be one of awe, wonder,
amazement, delight, joy. It should thrill us beyond
words. But, sadly, it is a gift we can take so easily
for granted, especially if we attend Mass every Sunday
or more often. We can become so accustomed to the words
and actions that they lose their impact. It can all
become dull, predictable, routine, mundane.
Today’s
feast gives us the chance to marvel afresh at what happens
in the Eucharist, to give thanks for Christ’s
gift to us, his body and blood, which leads us to eternal
life.
