The Parable of the Prodigal Son

In the parable of the Prodigal Son, which is put before us in today’s Gospel, we see Jesus, the master storyteller, at his best. The three main characters are so clearly delineated that it is impossible not to get the message. The younger son is feckless and irresponsible, demanding his inheritance before it is due, spending it recklessly and leading a very disordered life. Yet in the midst of all this, he never loses his trust in his father’s love and compassion, which give him the strength to come home again.

The father is not sitting at home, nursing grievances of hurt and resentment that his younger son has behaved in such an unacceptable manner. No. He is out looking for him and when he sees him in the distance runs to him and welcomes him tenderly.

The elder son is probably too clearly described for our liking because it is with him that we most closely identify – like him, we have tried to keep the rules, like him we have received nothing for our pains – or so we think. Like him we are resentful that the younger son is welcomed home with such great joy. The father’s words to the older son should give us hope and encouragement.

Celebrating Saint Patrick

Few countries in the world have a national patron to compare with Saint Patrick. Not only did he bring the Christian gospel to Ireland in a way nobody else did, but he left a permanent memory behind that has united Irish people over the centuries and across the five continents of the world. On the feast of Saint Patrick we pray that we will remain strong in love and faithful to the way of Christ.
