He Began to Teach Them

Jesus, in the Gospel, is helping the apostles come to grips with that reality: the suffering that the Son of God must undergo for his people. At their stage of learning, it had not surprised the apostles to find people thinking of Jesus sort of like a performer, a return of the great heroes of the past. Moses, Elijah, John the Baptist. Maybe that is who he was! But Jesus wants to see if they are ready for a deeper truth about him. He asks who they themselves think he is. Peter at least seems ready. “You are the Christ,” he says. Very good, teacher Jesus seems to think. They have come to stage two of their learning. Now is the time to give them a big scoop of the truth. “The Son of Man must suffer greatly … and be killed, and rise after three days.”

Again Peter speaks for the rest of them, but now he “rebukes” the Christ. Destabilized, he starts recommending the same superficialities that Satan had employed to tempt Jesus in the desert. Please yourself; seek status! Let us protect you! That is why Jesus calls him “Satan.”

So it will take a while more for the apostles to understand, just as it will for you and me. They will run away when Christ has actually to “suffer greatly and be killed”—except of course for the women and the apostle John.

A love that carries someone into death is quite difficult to understand. It hides down there “beyond all thought and feeling and imagination”. But it is exactly what Jesus is teaching us about.

What stage are you in?
