Forgiveness and Inclusivity
The two major themes emerging from today’s readings
are forgiveness and inclusivity. The first step in seeking
God’s forgiveness is the clear naming and acknowledging
of the sin that has been committed. This David does
immediately as Nathan challenges him. Despite his remorse
and God’s forgiveness, God’s retribution
remains for David and his household. In the Gospel,
this gracious forgiveness of God is further developed
in Jesus, who demonstrates a forgiveness that is complete
with no further retribution!
Simon the Pharisee
stands as a foil to all of us. Can we see a little bit
of ourselves in him and his attitude? It is easy to
be blind to our faults and slip into the hypocrisy of
judging and excluding others who fail to meet our narrow
criteria of social acceptability. Jesus consistently
turns these perceptions on their head. There is no one
who is turned away by Jesus from sharing his table.
The most marginalised find a place there. Paul extends
this inclusion and welcome to all the Gentiles who have
come to believe in Christ.
Jesus exposes
the lie at the heart of Simon’s distant hospitality
and the woman’s outpouring of genuine affection.
It is so much easier to accept forgiveness than it is
to extend it to another. What is clear is that love
is the natural response of the forgiven. Simon, so sure
of his moral superiority, has little self-awareness
of his need for forgiveness. Consequently his capacity
for love is severely diminished. The imperative attitude
for the experience of God’s forgiveness, which
we all need, is one of utter humility before God. The
result: an emboldened and generous love and a fearless
sense of one’s worth. Forgiveness liberates people
into their true selves before God.
