The Challenge
of Risk
On the surface,
the rich young man of today’s Gospel reading seemed
to have everything going for him – he had youth,
riches, generosity and enthusiasm. He lived an upright
and law-abiding life and he wanted to do more. In Jesus
he found his ideal – the life that Jesus was leading
was one that attracted him and awoke in him the desire
to want to imitate him.
However, he found
himself faced by the challenge which Jesus had already
expressed in words and which he himself was living in
deed – the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.
The young man found himself unable to turn his back
on his considerable riches and commit himself to the
radical uncertainty of following Christ.
For all we know,
the young man may have found himself able, at a later
date, to accept the challenge Jesus was offering. For
the moment, however, he was unable to and, as we read
in the Gospel, “his face fell and he went away
sad”.
Risky living
is part and parcel of following Christ – not the
risk a skydiver or a stunt pilot takes but the risk
of really believing that Jesus will provide for all
our needs if we commit our lives to him.
Today is Emigrant
Sunday and we remember those who, because of economic
factors or financial difficulties, had to take the ultimate
risk of leaving behind family, home and friends to seek
a new life in another country. We pray for them and
we remember them, especially those who have died and
are buried in graves far from home, awaiting the resurrection.
Next
Sunday is Mission Sunday
A special collection
will be taken up next Sunday in aid of our brothers
and sisters currently on mission allowing them to continue
their difficult but vital work. Projects supported by
the funds raised through the Mission Sunday collection
include the building of simple mission churches, the
education of seminarians and the formation of lay leaders.
The Mission Sunday gift was also used for the building
of health clinics for children, emergency aid in times
of war or natural disaster and assisted missionaries
in their efforts to care for refugees. The theme of
Mission Sunday 2009 is ‘Reach Out’. The
Society is promoting the message that we too can ‘reach
out’ from home to help our missionaries; just
as in their everyday work Irish missionaries are reaching
out to help those among whom they live and work.
