Ave, Ave, Ave Maria!

This week our thoughts turn towards a little village in the south of France as the Derry Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes led by Bishop Hegarty sets off on its spiritual journey. Prior to the unusual events that took place in this remote spot in the Pyrenees in 1858, just over 150 years ago, there was nothing remarkable about Lourdes. Most of the attention of France and indeed of the wider world was centred on Paris where the restored imperial court of the Bonapartes was getting into its stride after the accession of Napoleon III as Emperor in 1852. The Crimean War had just ended and things were getting back to normal.

However, in one sense, things were completely normal. Just as Jesus chose illiterate fishermen to be the foundation stones of the Church, so now, through his Mother, Jesus chose an uneducated little girl, Bernadette Soubirous, to be the bearer of his message.

For a century and a half, Lourdes has been a place of prayer and healing to which people have come from all over the world. During his time on earth, Jesus proclaimed the good news of the kingdom and accompanied his preaching with great signs of healing among the people. That ministry of healing has been continued in a very significant way in Lourdes where men, women and children have found spiritual strength to carry the cross which Jesus says must be carried by all who would follow him. Many pilgrims have been physically healed in a manner that has confounded doctors and medical experts. We pray that God’s blessing and Mary’s prayers will accompany our pilgrims.

Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes

Mary, you showed yourself to Bernadette in the crevice of the rock. In the cold and grey of winter, you brought the warmth, light and beauty of your presence.

In the often obscure depths of our lives, in the depth of the world where evil is so powerful, bring hope, return our confidence!

You are the Immaculate Conception, come to our aid, sinners that we are. Give us the humility to have a change of heart, the courage to do penance. Teach us to pray for all people.

Guide us to the source of life. Make us pilgrims going forward with your Church, whet our appetite for the Eucharist, the bread for the journey, the bread of life.

Glory to you, Virgin Mary, blessed servant of the Lord. Amen.
