Lazarus

Lazarus had been dead for four days but Jesus brought him back to life. This miracle is truly one of the most incredible in the whole of the New Testament. Jesus had previously raised others from the dead but Lazarus had been in the tomb for over four days. His body would be decomposing.

Through this miracle we are introduced to Jesus’ teaching on the resurrection. Jesus says: ‘I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die’ (v.25). Truly, these are among the most profound and powerful words ever spoken by the Lord. They reveal that he is the Lord of life and death and has power over our enemy death because he is the Resurrection and he is the Life.

The wonderful truth for us to hold on to is that we have tasted the life of Christ: in prayer, through reading scripture, in receiving the Eucharist, in serving one another in love. We live no longer for ourselves but for him who died and was raised to life on the third day: this is our vocation. We are children of the resurrection and our prayer every day should be that we would know the power of this resurrection in our own lives.

St Patrick

(St Patrick's Window in St Eugene's Cathedral)

Few countries in the world have a national patron to compare with St Patrick. Not only did he bring the Christian gospel to Ireland in a way nobody else did, but he left a permanent memory behind that has united Irish people over the centuries and across the five continents of the world.

Why was he so successful? He must have presented Christ to the Irish people in a way that fascinated them, impressed them and fed their great hunger for the lofty message which kept Patrick faithful in all his trials. On the feast of St Patrick we pray that we will remain strong in love and faithful to the way of Christ. There are no church celebrations allowed on Holy Week so this year’s St Patrick’s Masses will be celebrated on Saturday, 15th March. When the Feast is transferred the obligation is removed.
