Our Lady in Advent

Throughout the whole Advent season we feel the presence of the Virgin Mary. She remains discreetly in the background, but her influence is all-pervasive. Her role in the unfolding of God’s plan is all-important, but is entirely subordinate to that of her divine Son. Liturgically speaking, December has a greater claim to be called “Mary’s Month” than the month of May, although it is fitting too that popular devotion dedicates the most beautiful time of the year to the Mother of the Lord.

It is the scene of the Annunciation which is most constantly in the Church’s thought during Advent. This scene is commemorated, sometimes evoked in a dramatic way, in the liturgy. Its importance in the plan of salvation is thus highlighted. According to Catholic tradition, Mary’s fiat, her unqualified “yes” to the role God had chosen for her, was of decisive importance in the bringing to fruition of God’s plan for the salvation of mankind. In the words of the Second Vatican Council: “The Virgin Mary, when the angel brought the news, welcomed the Word of God in her heart and in her body and brought life into the world”; and, further on in its Constitution on the Church , it adds: “Embracing God’s saving will with a full heart and impeded by no sin, she devoted herself totally as a handmaid of the Lord to the person and work of her Son. In subordination to him along with him, by the grace of almighty God she has served the mystery of redemption”.
