Feast of the Most Holy Trinity

Today we celebrate the feast of the Holy Trinity. It is a feast that gives us a wonderful insight into the very life of God, yet it is a profound mystery. For the God we believe in and worship is a three-in-one God. We believe that there are three divine persons, each separate and distinct, in the one and the same God. The first person of the Trinity is God the Father, the second, God the Son; the third, God the Holy Spirit. Each is perfectly equal to the other, each is God,yet there is still only one God. How can this be?

The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity as the central mystery of Christian faith and life. It cannot be explained or understood completely from reason. It is a strict mystery. But even though we cannot fully understand it, the Trinity does provide us with a wonderful glimpse into God’s secret life. It tells us that our God is not a solitary God, an isolated being. It tells us that God is relationship - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - and the basis of that relationship is love.

The three persons of the Holy Trinity are so close to one another, so united to each other, so in love with each other, that they become perfectly one. Their communion is so strong, their self-giving love so total, that the three become one, while remaining distinct persons. The Trinity is the perfect realisation of perfect love. (from ‘Reality’ June Edition)

St Eugene’s Cathedral Choir presents an Evening of Sacred Music, Scripture and Prayers: A most special evening for the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ on Sunday next in St Eugene’s Cathedral from 8.00 pm to 9.15 pm. The Cathedral will host a beautiful and prayerful Evening of Sacred Music. All welcome - no charge.

The Life of St Columba - Columba, or Colmcille, secondary Patron of Ireland, holds a unique position in the Irish Church and in our culture and tradition. One has only to look at the number of places throughout the country that bear his name. He was the greatest of the early saints and missionaries who spread a uniquely Irish Christian message across Europe. Born in Donegal into a princely family he was educated by the leading scholars of his time and in his turn became a monk, a scholar and a person of great influence in the affairs of his people. He founded a number of monasteries around Ireland including Kells, Durrow and Tory Island. In 583AD he sailed from Derry with twelve companions, bound for Scotland, where he spent the rest of his life. He died on his monastic island of Iona on 9th June 597AD.

The St Columba’s Church Centenary Mass with Papal Legate will take place at 7.30pm on Tuesday, the Feast of St Columba. Next week’s liturgy will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the opening of St Columba’s Church, Long Tower. It is the culmination of a year of celebration and the annual parish Novena in honour of the Saint. It will be offered in thanksgiving for the life of Columba whose spirit is present with us today and accompanies us into the future. We celebrate the life, mission and inspiration of Colum Cille - “Dove of the Church”. May he, who began his ministry on this hallowed ground in olden days grant us his perpetual intercession. A Naomh Cholmcille, guí orainn.
