Parish News for Sunday 6th Sept 2009

Vol.36 No.35

PRIESTS OF THE PARISH
Very Rev Michael Canny Adm
Fr Peter Raftery CSSp
Rev Daniel McFaul CC

Birthday of Our Lady

The feast of the birthday of Our Lady developed rather late in the Church, under the influence of the Holy Spirit at work in the lives of prayerful disciples of Christ. In a sense, this late development parallels the way the Church introduced the feast of Christmas much later than the feast of Easter. To rejoice in a birthday is something very human. Having done so for Jesus Christ, it was natural to do the same for Mary, his mother.

It was only after Christians had long contemplated Christ’s death and resurrection, that they felt the need to invest so much devotional energy in celebrating the day of his birth. Likewise, after meditating on Mary being specially chosen by God, and after acknowledging that she was the all-holy Mother of God, it made sense to rejoice in Mary’s birth as a daughter of Israel.

CCC 487: “”What the Catholic faith believes about Mary is based on what it believes about Christ, and what it teaches about Mary illumines in turn its faith in Christ”.
