Unnecessary Baggage
One of the most
unpleasant aspects of overseas travel is having to take
so much baggage with us - despite the attempts of some
airlines to encourage us to bring less by putting a
surcharge on every piece of baggage other than the basic
minimum. If we are honest with ourselves, we tend to
take far more than we need if we are going abroad on
holiday or for some other reason. We look forward to
that short period of relief after we have checked our
baggage in - only to have to face the ordeal again at
the other end of our journey.
We don’t
need to have a degree in psychology to realise that
bringing so much unnecessary “stuff” with
us when we travel is a sign of our own insecurity. When
we are away from home, we feel somewhat at risk. So
we bring things from home with which we are familiar
in the hope that they will reduce our sense of insecurity
- even though we will probably not need them.
In today’s
Gospel, Jesus is sending his disciples out on their
first mission of preaching the good news of the Kingdom.
We might have expected him to give his disciples a last-minute
lesson in theology, some final instructions on how to
present the message to the people to whom he is sending
them. But no. Instead, he warns them to take nothing
for the journey - their trust must be in his power alone
and not in any material possessions that they might
take with them. Jesus calls us to an ever-deepening
trust in his unfailing care for us.
