Parish News for Sunday 4th January 2009

Vol.36 No.01

Second Sunday after Christmas

PRIESTS OF THE PARISH
Very Rev Michael Canny Adm
Rev David O'Kane CC
Rev Daniel McFaul CC

As we begin a new year we would like to express our appreciation to all who gave their services so generously in 2008. We thank especially Altar Servers, Cleaners, Choirs, Flower Arrangers, Readers, Organists, Eucharistic Ministers, Counters, Collectors, Parish Sister, Fundraising Committee, Friends of St Eugene’s Draw Committee and Promotors, Savings Committee and Collectors, St Vincent de Paul Society, Scouts and all who in any capacity contributed to the work of the parish.

Feast of the Epiphany

Tuesday, 6th January is the feast of the Epiphany. The word “epiphany” means “appearance” or “manifestation”. We have just completed the celebration of Christmas and the birth of Jesus. As time goes on we want to think about the meaning of this event in our lives and just how the appearance of Christ on earth affects our lives.

Mission is at the very heart of the feast of the Epiphany because it reveals how those who do not know Christ can be moved, compelled and convinced by the gospel to bow down and worship. In fact, every effort we make at mission - sharing our faith and giving witness by deeds - is nothing less than an epiphany. Why? Because when we do this, God’s word is manifested and fulfilled in the world.

The journey made by the Wise Men was made in faith, with courage and dedication. At the start of this new year their example should inspire us to follow the star of Christ in the days and weeks of 2009.

Feast of the Epiphany, Tuesday, 6th January

It is a Holyday of Obligation. Masses for the Holyday are as follows:

Monday: 6.15 pm and 7.30 pm Vigil Masses.
Tuesday: 7.00, 9.30 and 11.00 am, 12.30 and 7.30 pm.

There will be a collection for the Parish Missionaries Overseas at all Masses on the Feast of the Epiphany. There are a number of priests and nuns from the parish who are in Africa, South America and different parts of the world. This collection will be used to support them in their missionary work.

If you wish to nominate a priest or nun who have family connections in the Parish for financial support please give their name and contact details to the Parochial House.

Two sample messages of thanks received from Parish Missionaries who received donations during the year

Sister Maureen Coyle e-mailed to say thank you for your generosity to her missions in Peru. ‘I will take the money out tomorrow as we have a “ Chocolatado “ (Hot chocolate and Paneton) for the children of our parish on Sunday and so will be able to buy the needed sugar, milk, breads etc. God is always so good to us. We were short this year and your donation comes along. Really, God takes care of us always. We planned this hoping that we would be able to give all the children something to eat. Here there is no such thing as Santa Clause or toys but it is the custom to give the poor (old people and children) something to eat and the get together is always good to build community among us. Thanks again for your help.‘

Sister Lily McKenna who works in Brasil used her donation to pay for electricity and food for HIV positive children who were abandoned at birth by their parents who suffer from drug addition. Her Sisters (known as the Killyshannon Sisters, Co Cavan) have managed to buy a home in Sao Paulo and renovated it for the children, which is run by a group of women voluntarily.
