St John Vianney - Curé of Ars

Model Parish Priest

Pope Benedict XVI has for this Jubilee Year for Priests proclaimed St John Vianney as ‘patron saint of all the priests of the world’. St John Vianney is universally known as the Curé of Ars. He was ordained a priest in 1815 and three years later was made parish priest of Ars, a remote hamlet where his reputation as a confessor and director of souls brought him worldwide acclaim. His life was one of extreme mortification, sanctity and service of others. Through his life and his dedication to his vocation he gave wonderful witness to what the life of the priest should be. He died on 4th August 1859 and was canonized on 31st May 1925.

He had that rare gift that saints have which is that they are able to speak with wisdom and clarity about many issues which impact our lives. Below are a few examples of the sayings and insight of the great Curé of Ars to illustrate the gift of wisdom God had so abundantly poured out on him.

‘All our religion is but a false religion, and all our virtues are mere illusions and we ourselves are only hypocrites in the sight of God, if we have not that universal charity for everyone - for the good and for the bad, for the poor and for the rich, and for all those who do us harm as much as those who do us good.’

‘If people would do for God what they do for the world, what a great number of Christians would go to Heaven.’

‘You cannot please both God and the world at the same time. They are utterly opposed to each other in their thoughts, their desires, and their actions.’

The Pope’s Intentions for August

General: That public opinion may be more aware of the problem of millions of displaced persons and refugees and that concrete solutions may be found for their often tragic situation.

Mission: That those Christians who are discriminated against and persecuted in many countries because of the name of Christ may have their human rights, equality and religious freedom recognised, in order to be able to live and profess their own faith freely.
