PRIESTS
OF THE PARISH
Very Rev Michael Canny Adm
Fr Peter Raftery CSSp
Rev Daniel McFaul CC
Fr Joseph Varghese

Jesus knows that the hour of his death is approaching,
and so he leaves his disciples with his most important
commandment, that they should love one another as he
has loved them. He calls this a ‘new commandment’:
the command to love was not new, but the new element
was that we are to love as Jesus loved. Our love is
to be modelled on and rooted in the great love of our
Saviour.
What
does it mean for us to love as Jesus has loved us?
We may be daunted
when we consider this, and think that it is impossible
to love as Jesus did. It would be impossible if it were
simply left to us, but the Lord has given us his Spirit
to guide and strengthen us.
When we feel
overwhelmed and think that the commandment is too hard
for us, this may not be a bad thing, because it means
we see our need for God’s grace. When we see our
weakness and poverty, when we consider the ways in which
we have failed to love others, then we are moved to
ask the Lord for his help. He can work powerfully in
hearts that are truly humble and open. Today let us
ask the Lord to move our hearts to repentance for not
keeping his commands, so that the power to love may
be released within us.
