The Earth that God Created

It is very difficult not to get caught up in the luxuries of life. The earth that God created is indeed good and beautiful and the world that we have generated for ourselves makes living easier and more comfortable. But the only certainty in this life is that we are all going to die. Yet, it is strange that often in our short time here, we lose sight of that one certainty and what lies beyond it. We seem so intent on gathering the comforts of life and becoming successful. The immediate, visible world seems to be our only reality.

Today’s Gospel is somewhat sad. It is easy to see the foolishness of the rich man when we hear the dialogue between him and God. But the rich fool is no more foolish than we are most of the time. We work to make ends meet. Then we make more and save it. And when we make even more we decide to pass it on to our children.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with working, with trying to make ends meet and being vigilant that we have enough. However when that concern becomes our main focus and we fail to share what we have with others, we drown out the voice of God. Without God’s voice in this parable, the story would not make sense. And our lives do not make sense without the whisperings of God. This is how we become rich towards God, by being attentive to his whisperings.

‘These things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ It is equally important to prepare our hearts for that one certainty and for the life that awaits us. These are the things that remain ours - kindness, tolerance, love and all the marks of the Kingdom. These are the things that enrich a life and the kind of life that is being demanded of us ‘this very night’.
